First edition, 8vo, pp. [4], x, [2], 303, [1]; original blue paper-covered boards, brown paper shelfback, printed paper label on spine; hinges cracked, upper cover held by cords, vertical crack in the spine and with loss of paper at the bottom of the spine; all else clean and the sewing structure remains sound. With an early ownership signature of Edward Thomas Stanley Hornby, 1824 on front pastedown. Contained in a blue cloth slipcase lettered in gilt on spine. Stanley (1782-1825) wrote one book of poetry, Childhood, in 1822. He was educated at Eton and Brasenose College Oxford, obtained a Fellowship at All Souls, and entered the church. He died at Orford Hall, Lancashire, on 20 Mar. 1825 from asthma or consumption. He never married. He made provision in his for his "four dear sisters" Georgiana, Fanny, Louisa, and Henrietta. Another sister, Charlotte, had married the 13th Earl of Derby in 1798 but had died in 1817. His elder brother Edmund (1773-1857) became an MP and High Sheriff of Lancashire; his younger brother Sir Phipps (1785-1867) rose to the rank of admiral in the navy.
