Moderate shelf/edge wear and rubbing to black cloth boards with gilt spine titles and elaborate gilt illustration on the front board - corners bumped and worn. Small blemish at top front of gutter. Previous owner name lightly written on FFEP ( Mrs G. N. Harris. 1913). All other pages are clean and unmarked. Some light spotting (foxing) to the title page and the contents pages. TEG (top edge gilt). 16 chapters. 12 color illustrations with all titled tissue guards intact and 34 B&W illustrations as well. Color illustrations by Montague Smyth (1863?1965). Author Rev.John MacGowan (1835-1922) was born in Belfast and went to China with the London Missionary Society. Chapters are: 1) The Chinaman. 2) Family life. 3) Child life. 4) Religious forces in China. 5) Servants. 6) The adaptability and tenacity of purpose of the Chinese. 7) Amusements. 8) The farmer. 9) A ramble through a Chinese city. 10) Hades, or the land of shadows. 11) A chapter on some of the more shady professions in Chinese life. 12) Schools, school-masters, and school-books. 13) The Mandarin. 14) Peddler life in China. 15)The Seamy side of Chinese life and 16) A trip through the country.
