[from front jacket flap] An ardent "Johnny Reb" from Georgia, Charles S. Thomas migrated north and west after the Civil War. Eventually he became the governor, and later a senator, of his adopted state of Colorado. His son has written, in a vigorous, straightforward style, of his father's colorful career as lawyer and statesman, beginning with his Southern boyhood on a Georgia plantation, his brief service with Georgia troops, and his experience of seeing Jefferson Davis, a captive, being brought to Macon in May, 1865. Following graduation in 1871 from law school of the University of Michigan, he looked over the prospects in Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa, and then decided to go on to Colorado. He arrived in Denver early on the morning of December 18, 1871, and here he made his headquarters for many of the remaining years of his life. Choosing to specialize in mining law, he achieved prominence in the field and, as a lawyer, his services were, eventually, much in demand. Seller Inventory # 20241001004
