First edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece and borders by Paul Woodroffe. Musical setting by Joseph Moorat. Two nested folio sheet folded to make [8]pp., measuring approximately 8½" x 11½" closed. Printed in black, brown, and (a single line in) red. Top of the cover faintly toned, two pinholes in the margin of the final leaf, else fine. A beautiful production, printed in an edition of 400 copies (Ransom, p.267) for Christmas, 1902. The Essex House Press was founded by Charles Robert Ashbee and Laurence Hodson in 1898. Ashbee (1863-1942), a designer and entrepreneur active in the English Arts and Crafts movement, set up his Guild and School of Handicraft in 1888; after William Morris' Kelmscott Press closed in 1897, he took on many of the Kelmscott printers and craftsmen and founded The Essex House Press. Between 1898 and 1910 the Essex House Press produced more than 70 titles. *OCLC* locates two copies (Northwestern, British Library). Seller Inventory # 517876
