First edition, 8vo, xvi, 295, [1]; frontispiece portrait, 33 illustrations from photographs on 17 plates; later half tan calf over marbled boards, gilt-lettered direct on gilt-paneled spine, ribbon bookmark; near fine. Ownership signature of "Leonard Clark, Shanghai," possibly Leonard Clark (1907-1957), the American explorer who during World War II flew in China "behind Japanese lines, organized guerrilla activity and espionage in China and Mongolia" (Wikipedia). Also, with an inscription in an earlier hand on the half-title: "It was in de Sowerby's Shanghai Museum I proposed - of all places, to Jeanne!".
