First edition, 8vo, pp. xvi, 262; 2 portraits and 85 illustrations largely from photographs on rectos and versos of 43 plates, plus a large folding color map in rear cover pocket; original black cloth lettered in gilt on spine; very good, sound, and clean. Ownership signature of L. L. Fermor on front free endpaper. Sir Lewis Leigh Fermor, OBE, FRS (1880-1954), was a British chemist and geologist and the first president of the Indian National Science Academy and a director of the Geological Survey of India (1930-1935). "Hayden, a member of the Younghusband Mission to Tibet in 1904 as a geologist, started from Darjeeling to Lhasa in 1922 with his friend Cosson. Then they explored Tibet; the first to the North-West, i. e. the Great Central Plateau for two and a half months, and the second to the South-East into the Tsangpo and its tributaries for one month" (Yakushi H152).
