(London: Gollancz 1963). First UK Edition. Publisher's variant gilt-lettered brown boards (possibly a trial binding). Boards exceptionally bright and clean. An attractive book-plate to the front paste-down. No inscriptions. A near fine (or better) copy in like dustwrapper priced 18/- net to the inside flap (as called for). The dustwrapper shows NO FADING to the fugitive red spine; there is minuscule nicking to the spine tips and a closed tear at the bottom left hand corner of the spine adjacent to the rear panel (which is really bright and clean. A very nice copy indeed. The brown-boarded book is the nicest example that I have handled. The definitive Cold War novel, it won le Carré the 1964 Somerset Maugham Award and secured his reputation as a master of the spy thriller. Photographs/scans available upon request.
