25 x 15 cm. Octavo. 356pp [8] ads. Bound into 1/2 brown decorated cloth, grey paper over boards covers, chipped paper spine label. Originally printed in 1834 with the title "Letters to a Gentleman in Germany written after a trip from Philadelphia to Niagara", this copy with a reset title page but otherwise same interior and date of 1835 so a second issue of the first edition. Binding remains tight. Foxing and some soiling throughout. Edgewear to the boards. Previous owner's name, dated 1840, on front free endpaper. Lieber was a German-American best known for writing "The Lieber Codes" during the American Civil War. The Lieber Codes mostly outlined how the US government expected prisoners of war to be treated and served as the basis for the Hague Convetions of 1899 & 1907 and for the Geneva Conventions.
