About this Item

First printing. The "White City" refers to the main buildings of Chicago's Columbian Exposition; the novel takes place in Chicago during the time of the Exposition. 411 pp. plus 6 pp. of ads. Bound in charcoal gray cloth with a decorated cover in silver that is characteristic of the designs of H-M's book designer, Sarah Whitman, at this period. On the upper part of the front cover are the Whitman-designed letters in the title and author's name over which there are three simple but somewhat varied little floral rings. The spine lettering is also in silver. This copy has seen a good bit of wear and the front hinge is broken. An owner's name is written in ink on the inside cover. The page edges are browned and there is a bit of foxing or staining of some lower page edges. It's a good reading copy or a good example of one of Whitman's 1894 designs (the cover is presentable). Store Description

Alberta's Books is a seller of several thousand used, rare, and out-of-print books from a home in a historic district in Kingston, New York. The collection originated when I bought some charming old books from a mansion down the street and found Alberta's name in them. As years went by, I was continually attracted to the kind of well-made, often beautiful books that were commonly bought as gifts and to form reading libraries around 1900 - the kind of books Alberta had. But we also collect and now sell other kinds of books as well and we are always interested in acquiring out-of-print books that are in exceptionally good condition.
