The author saw the need to create a systematic and chronological record of surgical history in America and elevate the status of the surgical profession with the publication of textbook for students and practicing physicians. During this period surgery was not considered a separate branch of medicine but a mere technical mode of treatment. Smith's work helped give surgeons a measure of professional recognition and self-respect. A clean very presentable copy.
