12mo. x, 316 pp., frontis, ports. First edition. In contemporary half morocco binding with corners; six portraits, all present as called for. Rubbing to extremities including some chipping to the spine ends; corners frayed; boards have been discreetly reattached; largely a clean copy and free of foxing but for several preliminary and terminal leaves. Coulter calls this, "a well-considered, reliable account of what an observant and intelligent Englishman saw during a three-months journey from one end of the Confederacy to the other" Coulter 175. And while Fremantle was sympathetic to the Confederacy and the enthusiasm and patriotism of soldiers and civilians, he "did not fail to record some uncomplimentary observations." Nevins writes, "Fully deserving of its reputation as the best commentary on the wartime South by an English visitor" CWB I, 91 (NY edition).
