First edition in English, 8vo, pp. xv, [1], 719, [1]; 10 portraits (including frontispiece) largely from photographs, 1 facsimile, 1 folding plate and a folding map printed in color at the back showing the author's route, 63 text illustrations; original brown cloth stamped in gilt on upper cover and spine, t.e.g.; the rear hinge just starting, else a very good, sound, and clean copy. A publisher's slip tipped in at flyleaf notes that "purchasers are requested to see that they receive with the book the large presentation plate of Lhasa," which is not included here. Yakushi K83: "This is a translation of papers originally published in Japanese newspapers describing a journey to Tibet through Nepal between 1897 and 1903, and a year's residence in Lhasa. The author was a Japanese priest." He was the first recorded Japanese to visit Tibet.
