This copy inscribed by the author on the frontispiece: "'We may spurn the heavy-eyed sloth of the crowded town, but this man of the hills is our brother.' - Oscar T. Crosby." "The author traveled from Turkestan to Leh with a French F. Anginieur, at the end of 1903. The book is largely political and historical" (Yakushi). More precisely, the journey began at the Caspian Sea, continued by rail through Russian Turkestan and on to Andijan, then by caravan over the Trans-Alai Mountains to Kashgar in Chinese Turkestan, through Yarkland and Khotan to Polo, up the Tibetan plateau, through Aksai Chin and Ladak, Kashmir to Rawal Pindi and then by rail to Bombay.
