First edition, 8vo, pp. xix, [1], 201, [1]; mounted photographic frontispiece, 100 illustrations from photographs on 50 plates (1 plate loose, but present), and a folding map printed in color; original pictorial red cloth, gilt-stamped on upper cover and spine, t.e.g.; front hinge cracked at the half-title, light wear and minor sunning; generally a good, clean copy, with interesting associations. Inscribed by the author on the front free flyleaf "To Colonel H. Appleton who kindly placed the invaluable assistance of his pioneer experiences at my disposal, from the author, Jany. 1st, 1910," and with a tipped in one-and-a-half-page letter from Wood dated January 2, 1910 on Long Clawson Manor stationery, addressed to Appleton and presenting this book to him: "I am sending you through Messrs. Cox & Co. as some slight recognition of your kindness . I have now got the acquaintancy of the Lincolnshire Yoemanry & am hunting from here. This is a little house I have taken." Furthermore, on 9 pages of the introduction and in the appendices are rather extensive notes by Appleton on rifles and ammunition, field glasses, clothing, camp furniture, provisions, etc. "As regards provisions - In Kashmir one has to get all one's flour to last till arrival at Kashgar or Yarkand - unless one has arranged the autumn before to have a few hundred pounds sent on ahead to Gilget - It may not be procurable there - Mutton and milk obtainable on Pamirs & generally everywhere ahead - At Kashgar a few supplies such as sugar, flour obtainable and a few Russian tinned things."
