Original illustrated green buckram boards with gilt and black-stamped images and tooling to the front covers and spines. Tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece in each volume. Original small publisher's advertising sheet for the work laid in at the front cover of the first volume. 1876 stated on title page and on verso of title. "Eugene Schuyler, who was Secretary of the American Legation at St. Petersburg, traveled extensively in Russian Central Asia and provides in this monumental work an exceptionally detailed description of the regions through which he traveled. He gives accounts of the economic, political and religious and social conditions, as well as detailed descriptions of places of worship, habits of dress and local languages. In his Preface, the author states the following: "The Chief aim of my journey in Central Asia was to study the political and social condition of the regions which had been recently annexed by Russia, as well as to compare the state of the inhabitants under Russian rule with that of those still living under the despotism of the Khans." (From the Preface). This work is lavishly illustrated throughout with numerous engravings as well as three fold-out maps. The work was originally published simultaneously in America and the UK in 1876. Bindings with head and tails of spines rubbed, with some abrasions and light discoloration to cloth. Light rubbing to extremities. Interior gutters of vol.2 reinforced with japan tissue. Bindings still quite tight overall. Bindings in good to very good-, interiors in very good to very good+ condition overall. Bindings protected in modern mylar. Seller Inventory # 52770
