Second issue of the Joel Chandler Harris classic, whose success launched a great flood of dialect literature his other followers were Craddock, Riley, Octave Thanet, and Hamlin Garland Grolier 100 First edition, second Issue with "presumptuous" for "presumptive" in the last line of page 9, and with no mention of this book in the ads at the back of the book. 12mo. Frontispiece and 7 plates, numerous text illustrations by Frederick S. Church and James H. Moser. Original sepia brown cloth, pictorial gilt cover and spine. Very good, bright copy (slight rubbing and wear). BAL 7100; Grolier One Hundred American 83. In the rare grey blue gilt pictorial cloth of brer rabbit and his pipe, a tight fine bright copy, with an early 1880 owner's signature inside the inner flyleaf and a tidal mark on the front and back board to mar its near fine condition under mylar protection.
