PLUTARCO (c. 46 – c. 120/5 d. C.), historiador y fil�sofo griego, est� considerado uno de los grandes bi�grafos de la Antig�edad cl�sica gracias a su vasto proyecto Vidas paralelas. Nacido en Queronea, recibi� una s�lida formaci�n ret�rica y filos�fica. Su fama como erudito le llev� a ocupar cargos importantes tanto pol�ticos como religiosos, e incluso se le concedi� la ciudadan�a romana, un honor nada habitual en aquella �poca, a pesar de que �l mismo reconoc�a no dominar bien el lat�n. Su abundante obra en griego, de la que afortunadamente ha sobrevivido su mayor parte, se ha dividido tradicionalmente en dos grandes partes bien diferenciadas: la conformada por sus Vidas paralelas, obra de madurez en la que empareja las biograf�as de c�lebres personajes griegos y romanos por sus similitudes, y la que aglutina el resto de sus escritos bajo el nombre de Obras morales y de costumbres, un gran corpus en el que caben trabajos de historia, filosof�a, pol�tica y cuadros costumbristas.
