Impressive triple fold-out engraving of a religious procession depicting hundreds of figures in costume. Two fold-out maps: North America & South America. Frontispiece: a four portrait composite which includes: Columbus, William Penn, Alexander von Humboldt, and Alcide D'Orbigny. Quoting Borba 632: "Republished in Paris in 1841 and in Brussels in 1854. It is probably the most expensive of the great nineteenth century scientific publications of interest to Brazil." Quoting the Introduction, XII: "Quant e l'Amerique meridionale, elle laissait encore un vaste champ e l'observateur; car M. de Humboldt n'avait explore qu'une partie du Perou et de la Colombie. Cette dernicre contrae vit aussi sur ses cites occidentales l'Anglais Stevenson. En 1823, M. Mollien en parcourut l'interieur, de meme que le colonel Hall, Hamilton, Robinson, Lavaisse et Hippioley.
