First edition. 8vo. Cloth, titles in dark brown on front cover and spine, maps on front and rear endpapers, xii [2], 224 [2] pp., foreword, illustrated from photographs and black & white drawings, selected bibliography. Illustrated and designed by Don Perceval. In 1909 a sensational double killing in Southern California led to what has been called the West's last famous manhunt. Willie Boy, a Paiute Indian who killed the father of a girl he loved so he could run off with her, is chased by a posse across more than 500 miles of harsh desert wilderness. This story was immortalized in the Robert Redford film, Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here. This work was awarded the James D. Phelan Award in Literature, and Desert Magazine awarded the book with the Southwest Literature Award. This copy is from the library of writer Fred Gipson with his small bookplate on the front pastedown sheet. A fine copy in dust jacket with a small chip to head of spine and top front corner and light wear to foot of spine and extremities. A fascinating read.…
