"While in India [Adams] was a keen ornithologist: he studied birds in the Siwalik hills around Dagshai and was the first naturalist to explore the interior of Ladakh. His observations were detailed in his papers 'The birds of Cashmere and Ladakh' and 'Notes on the habits, haunts, etc. of some of the birds of India' (Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, 1858, 169 90 and 466 512), and in his book Wanderings of a Naturalist in India, the Western Himalayas and Cashmere (1867). He collected the type specimens of the orange bullfinch Pyrrhula aurantiaca and the black-winged (Tibet, Adams's) snowfinch Montifringilla adamsi, and was the first to discover the breeding site of the brown-headed gull Larus brunnicephalus on the lakes of the Tibetan plateau.
