Grime ___ BOOK'S HISTORY: Author Kathi Kern (Mrs Stanton's Bible, 2001, Cornell Univ Press) wrote "The [1895] Woman's Bible proved to be the most devastating weapon in the [1920] antisuffragist arsenal. Twenty-five years after it first appeared in print, The [1895] Woman's Bible still wreaked political havoc among supporters of woman's rights." _____ BOOK's TIMELINE: 1895 NOV. Woman's Bible Part I, 1st edition released. In Introduction STANTON WROTE ___"I do not believe that God inspired Mosaic code or told historians what they say he did about woman, for all religions on earth degrade her, and so long as woman accepts the position they assign her, her emancipation is impossible. Whatever the BIBLE may be made to do in Hebrew or Greek, in plain English it DOES NOT EXALT AND DIGNIFY WOMAN" ___ 1896 JAN/FEB. Newspapers declared "A BOOK OF INFIDELITY, A BITTER ATTACK UPON CHRISTIANITY." At NAWSA's Jan 1896 Washington, DC convention, members, worrying it would be a "detriment to the cause of woman suffrage," passed a resolution "That this Association is non-sectarian, being composed of persons of all shades of religious opinion, and that it has no official connection with the so-called 'Woman's Bible,' or any theological publication." ___ 1896 MARCH 2. Stanton wrote to son Theodore "the action in Washington sold off the edition in a twinkling and we are getting ready for second edition." ___ 1896 APRIL. Part I, 2nd Edition released with Mrs Catt's name replaced w/ Mrs Clara Neymann. _____ 1920s, TWENTY-FIVE YRS LATER. Tennessee Pastor JH GRIME owned THIS BOOK, perhaps in Aug 1920, during Tenn's ratification of 19th Amendment when ___ ANTI-SUFFRAGISTS exhibited original copies of 1895 1st Edition Woman's Bible Part I at Nashville headquarters and put out WOMAN'S BIBLE broadsides & newspaper ads, inviting Clergy and all to" COME AND SEE THE WOMAN'S BIBLE."___ ANTIS ALLEGED NAWSA PRESIDENT CATT, a Revising Committee member aligned with Stanton and her Woman's Bible doctrines, was anti-Christian, not fit to lead! ___ NEWSPAPERS REPORTED STORMY DISCOURSE RE CATT AND WOMAN'S BIBLE! (Search/read newspapers. comm). ___ CATT'S DENIAL "I was never a member of "revising committee" for the Woman's Bible. Although asked to be, I declined. Any printing of my name in connection with the book has been without my knowledge or consent." ___ NASHVILLE CLERGY. "The original Woman's Bibles on exhibit at anti-ratification headquarters are exciting tremendous interest among the clergy, someone constantly examining its pages, one of whom, an editor of a religious weekly, has used it again as it was used in 1896 as an argument against suffrage leadership and feminist doctrines." ___ ELDER J.
