Octavo, 408pp., illustrated with ten plates (plus inset illustrations). A good or better copy in modern black buckram with cloth endpapers and gilt-stamped morocco spine label. Some internal foxing, and there are two large and adequate (though not expert) paper repairs (to the title leaf and p. 185). Plates mostly in very good condition, though two of the folding plates have some shallow chipping to extremities, and one folding plate has a 3-inch closed tear at one fold. Note that, as in the Morgan copy, plate 8 is mislabled as [another] plate 5, but is in fact plate 8, and inserted at the relevant part of the printed text. Solid reading/reference copy of this sweeping work by the rather self-important archaeologist and politician. Howes A380; American Imprints 17449; Sabin 2336; Thomson 52. Seller Inventory # 10440
