First edition of this account of the British Government's abolitionist policies, by a prominent official in the slave trade department at the Foreign Office. Much of Bandinel's work draws on his direct access to government papers. James Bandinel (1783-1849) served from 1824 until 1845 as superintendent of the slave trade department, where he led efforts to enforce the trade's abolition. He collaborated with many of the leading political figures of the day: it was at his suggestion that Lord Palmerston concluded treaties with native authorities in the Congo to allow the use of force against slave traders operating in their territories. Bandinel's account includes a historical essay on the introduction of the slave trade into Europe and a study of the abolitionist campaigns at the turn of the 19th century. Hogg 84; Ragatz p. 475. Octavo (254 x 156 mm). Original green straight-grain cloth, spine lettered in gilt and ruled in blind, covers panelled and with central decoration in blind, yellow coated endpapers. Joints sympathetically restored, upper margin of front free endpaper replaced. Light bumping and wear, tape residue to inner hinge, minor finger soiling, browning, and foxing to endpapers and contents: just about a very good copy.
