First American edition (issued the same year as the London edition), 2 volumes, 8vo, pp. [iii]-xxvii,[4], 32-407, [1]; [iii]-x, [2], 14-436, 8 (ads); 2 engraved frontispieces, folding map, large folding plan of Osaka, numerous illustrations in the text, a number full-page; recent black cloth, printed paper labels on spine; Osaka plan with tear entering at the stub (no loss), generally a very good, sound copy. Account by the first British Consul-General to Japan, Rutherford Alcock (1809-1897) who was appointed in 1858.
