First edition, 4 volumes, 8vo, pp. [4], xvi, 469, [1]; [4], 455, [1]; [4], xxii 462; [4], 476; contemporary deep blue calf-backed marbled boards, somewhat scuffed and rubbed, and with a triangular piece missing from the lower corner of the upper board on volume I, but the bindings are sound and the text is clean. Ownership signature of Cary W. Bok, Oxford, in each volume. Bok (1905-1970) was treasurer and senior vice president of the Curtis Publishing Company, and President of Curtis Institute of Music. Volume I covers from the apostleship of Saint Thomas until the discovery of the Cape of Good Hope; volume II: from the passage of the Cape of Good Hope to the establishment of the Tartar-Manchu dynasty in China; volume III: from the establishment of the Tartar-Manchu dynasty, until the death of Emperor Khang hi; and volume IV: from the death of Emperor Khang-hi until the Treaty of Tien-Tsing in 1858.
