First edition of Walker's greatest dictionary, which had a more profound effect on the pronunciation of English than any other dictionary; 4to, [i]-viii, [4], [ix]-[lvi], [6], plus unpaginated lexicon in triple column; A4 a2 b-g4 B-4D4; a few spots and stains throughout, else a very good copy in full contemporary calf neatly rebacked, black morocco label on spine. An actor and lecturer on elocution, Walker (1732-1807) "enjoyed the patronage and friendship of Dr. Johnson, Edmund Burke, and other distinguished men" (DNB). His Pronouncing Dictionary is a landmark in English lexicography, the pronunciations eventually being married with Johnson's text; and thus, editions of Johnson-Walker proliferated into the 20th century. Hence did Walker's pronunciation became synonymous with standard English, and adherence to Walker evidenced good breeding and social standing. Alston V, 336; Kennedy 6308; Vancil, p. 248.
