2 volumes, 4to, pp. [66] plus unpaginated lexicon in triple column; engraved frontispiece portrait by Clayton after Reynolds; first two leaves in volume I wrinkled; clean tear in h1 in the first volume, and without leaf a2 (subscribers' list); some toning of the text, occasional dampstains; contemporary marbled boards neatly rebacked in calf, red and black morocco labels on spines; all else very good and sound. Dublin bookseller's ticket of Blenkensop and the ownership stamp of Wm. A. Cleary, and from the library of the Johnsonian scholar, Gwin Kolb with his book label laid in. The Essay on the Life and Genius of Samuel Johnson is by Arthur Murphy. This is the first edition to incorporate pronunciation, "apparently the work of Samuel Whyte" (Alston). Issued in weekly numbers and sold by subscription, the book sold poorly and only 316 subscribers took 602 copies; consequently, it is among the least common of the 18th century quartos.
