The Essay on the Life and Genius of Samuel Johnson is by Arthur Murphy. This is the first edition to incorporate pronunciation, "apparently the work of Samuel Whyte" (Alston). Issued in weekly numbers and sold by subscription, the book sold poorly and only 316 subscribers took 602 copies; consequently, it is among the least common of the 18th century quartos.
