First US edition. 8vo., original yellow/orange cloth lettered in gilt on spine with gilt block on upper board. A lttle darkening to spine, otherwise a very good copy. David Macdonald served as British political agent to Tibet in the early 20th century, acting as Waddell's assistant during Younghusband's expedition in 1904. Macdonald also served with the British Museum, cataloguing and removing a large array of manuscripts and artwork to be sent back to India. Appointed trade agent to Tibet in 1909, he became well acquainted with the 13th Dalai Lama Tubten Gyatso. This work contains a vast array of information on Tibet, its history from the time of the Tibetan empire to the so called 'Era of fragmentation' through to the Mongol conquests and finally under Qing Rule.
