First edition, 8vo (8" x 5¾"), pp. [6], 85, [1]; illustrated throughout with black and white sketches; original pink cloth-backed pictorial boards; boards and endpapers with some worming and minor loss, spine worn, binding shaken, first gathering loose; a good, clean copy. "Tung Chia" is a pseudonym for J. O. P. Bland (John Otway Percy Bland). This was his first book. He worked for Chinese Customs from 1883-1896 serving as Sir Robert Hart's private secretary. This is a book of light verse about life among the foreign expatriate communities in Chinese treaty ports. In 1896, he took the position of Assistant Secretary to the Shanghai Municipal Council.
