Duplay also has the merit of being the first to describe the function and pathology of the subacromial space ?which he calls 'second joint' to distinguish it from the 'first' (glenohumeral joint)- of having showed macroscopic pathological anatomy in a deceased patient he treated; of having described the symptoms of other eight cases; and of having first attempted, successfully, joint mobilization under anesthesia. He wrongly attributed the higher responsibility of the syndrome to the subacromial bursa whose removal was the basis for the evolution of the disease." ; Lubiecki M & Carr A: Frozen shoulder: past, present, and future, J Orthop Surg, 2007, 15(1), 1-3: "Manipulation under anaesthesia (MUA), recommended by Duplay in 1872 who first described the condition as periarthrite scapulohumérale, is still used today but is increasingly performed together with surgical intervention." ; Nagy MT et al.: The Frozen Shoulder: Myths and Realities, Open Orthop J. 2013, 7, 352?355: "Duplay was the first to recognize the condition as a pathology in its own right, referring to ?periarthrite scapulohumerale 'leading to the widespread but inappropriate use of the term ?periarthritis'.? ; Rockwood CA : The Shoulder, vol. 1, pp. 771-772 ; Ryan V et al.: The pathophysiology associated with primary (idiopathic) frozen shoulder: A systematic review, BMC Musculoskelet Disord. 2016, 17, 340 ; Aswad R & George R : L'épaule: une histoire de souplesse, Kinésithérapie, 2016, 16(171), 35-42; Jablonski S: Eponymis syndromes and diseases, p. 86: "Duplay's bursitis".
