First edition, 8vo, pp. 24; original drab paper wrapper presnt on the front (with signature clipped at the top), back wrapper perished; very good. Lowell (1769-1840) argues that the method of organizing Orthodox churches, the Congregational Church on Hanover St. being the latest example, is unconstitutional. Lowell's pamphlet elicited a response from Lyman Beecher who noted that Hanover St. Church was organized on the same model as the Park St. Church in 1809 and a number of others in the interim. Lowell, a lawyer known as the "Boston Rebel," was a prolific, albeit generally anonymous, controversialist whose influence was strictly local. Nonetheless, "his religious articles were widely read [in New England]; his contributions to the current controversy about the constitutions of the Massachusetts Congregational churches were considered valuable" (DAB).
