First separate edition of an excerpt from Life and Letters of Joseph Hardy Neesima, small 8vo, pp. 57, [3]; original card wrappers with printed pictorial dust jacket with border and vignette printed in purple on upper cover; tipped-in photographic frontispiece portrait of Nessima, and tipped in photo portraits of his adopted parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alpheus Hardy; gift inscription on half title ("To Mr. Honda, with the compliments of S.Morinaka"), prospectus laid in (with resultant shadow on half-title), staples rusty and textblock partially loose. Joseph Hardy Neesima (Jou Niijima) was one of the first Japanese to be educated in the US, having snuck aboard an American vessel while attempting to leave Japan when such an act was still punishable by death. He received an education at Amherst College, becoming the first Japanese person to receive a bachelor's degree, and later returned to Japan to establish the Doshisha University and Doshisha Women's College of Liberal Arts. He is considered an important figure in the modernization of Meiji Japan. Seller Inventory # 51257
