Floating Island Books, also the world headquarters for Floating Island Publications, is located in the far northeastern corner of California, right up against the Oregon and Nevada borders, 200 miles north of Reno and just inside the California line, and 200 miles east of Redding. It is a radiant gem of a small, eclectic, independent bookstore on the edge of the Great Basin, which includes most of Nevada, and portions of southeastern Oregon, southern Idaho, western Utah, and eastern California. Most visitors to the lovely Surprise Valley of Modoc County are amazed to find such a well-stocked bookstore in such a remote location, but once they do, they never forget it. Specialties include, but are not limited to: Western Americana, Native American Studies, Geology, Botany, and the Natural Sciences, Photography, Art, Children's Literature, fine quality Fiction and Non-Fiction, Poetry, Essays, and Criticism, Topographic Maps, Photo Cards, Music CDs, etc. Mostly used books, but with a deftly-selected variety of new books, primarily about the region. Many of the titles are available through ABE, and more are being added regularly, but a visit to the store is most definitely worth the drive. Fine music and comfortable chairs, excellent cafe next door, wide open spaces in every direction. Come for a visit, and you'll find yourself wanting to return A.S.A.P. During winter months, it is suggested you call first to either be sure it's open, or to make an appointment, (530) 279-2790 or (530) 279-2766.
