About this Item

Just what the title says: this biographical study of pirates in Europe and the Americas was written by one Captain Charles Johnson, whose true identity and sources remain unknown. Nevertheless, the editor remarks, Johnson's facts are accurate, and his book was wildly popular from the first edition, published in 1724. This version is reprinted from the fourth edition, enlarged and illustrated with many plates. 4to (24.8 cm, 9.75"). xvi, 603 pp.; illus. Blue cloth over boards; title, author, and an ornament of skull and crossbones gilt on spine. Front cover warped, cloth fraying on rear board corner edge, spine and covers faded. Mild to moderate foxing on some leaves, mostly on pages near plates. Bookseller Inventory # 30872
