About this Item

Second edition, in two volumes. The general titles have no imprint. The second title of vol. I is "New Travels in the United States of America, Performed in M.D.CC.L.XXXVIII." Vol. II includes "A sketch of the life of J. P. Brissot" and an engraved frontispiece portrait of Brissot. The second title of vol. II is "The Commerce of America with Europe; particularly with France and Great Britain; comparatively stated, and explained. Shewing the importance of the American Revolution to the interests of France, and pointing out the actual situation of the United States of North America, in regard to trade, manufactures, and population. By J. P. Brissot de Warville and ?tienne Clavi?re. Translated from the Last French edition, reviewed by Brissot, and called the second volume of his View of America. With the life of Brissot, and an appendix, by the translator." Sabin states, "The author came to the United States just before the French Revolution, for the purpose of selecting a suitable place for establishing a colony of respectable persons, who had determined to abandon the then despotic government of France, and seek an asylum under the mild and equal government of the United States. M. Brissot was commissioned to collect every necessary information, prior to the execution of so important a plan. These volumes contain the result of his assiduous labors, and minute enquiries, and sufficiently manifest that he was qualified to accomplish such an arduous udertaking. The second volume is a new edition of Brissot of Clavi?re's "De la France, et des ?tats-Unis," etc., printed at Paris in 1787, and in English in 1788." 8vo. 2 vols. I: [4 (3 blank)], xii, 416, [2 (blank)] pp. II: [2 (blank)], frontis., [2 (1 blank)], lxiv, 348 pp. Howes B-784; Sabin 8027, 8028, and 8029. Ex-library, rebound in library quarter leather over marbled paper boards, rubbed and chipped; charge-slips to rear free endpapers, and slight shadows of pencilling to the title-pages. No stamps. Last leaf of vol. I adhered along most of inner margin to final blank, with a bit of accompanying crumpling and a short tear to margin (only) at top of page. Occasional light foxing and soiling.
