About this Item

Little, Clarence Cook (1888-1971). The genetics of tissue transplantation in mammals. In The Journal of Cancer Research 8 (1924): 75-95. Whole number. 136pp. Text illustrations. 264 x 185 mm. (uncut and unopened). Original printed wrappers, a bit chipped. Fore-edges a little frayed, but very good. First Edition, journal issue. The cause of the homograft reaction--rejection of a genetically dissimilar graft or transplant by the host--was discovered through studies of animal cancers. "When researchers transplanted a tumour from one animal to another, they found it did not grow, not because of the nature of the cancer, or because of individual susceptibility, but because the tumour was being rejected as a foreign tissue, just as any normal tissue graft would be. It was Clarence Little at the Bar Harbor Laboratories in Maine who realized the problem and developed inbred strains of mice within which tissue transplants could be carried out because the mice no longer differed enough to recognize each other's tissue as foreign" (Bodmer & McKie, The Book of Man [1995], p. 114).
