In its present premises on Piccadilly for over two hundred years Hatchards is the oldest and finest bookshop in London. Established in 1797 Hatchards has served literary London for eight generations, including amongst its many patrons such luminaries as Lord Byron, Oscar Wilde, Graham Greene and Aldous Huxley. The Royal Society of Literature held its earliest meetings on our premises and we are booksellers by appointment to Her Majesty the Queen, Hatchards retains much of this history on the ground floor with our elegant double staircase and portrait of founder John Hatchard as well as our celebrated round table furnished with all the latest publications. Our staff are expert, varied and well-read who work at Hatchards because we value a sense of curiosity and a passion for books. They are friendly, interested in culture and able to communicate their enthusiasm and knowledge with energy. Indeed as PD James, another long-standing client of the house, once said of being in Hatchards "I know that I am in a proper bookshop".
