About this Item

Complete with all blanks, errata and publisher's advertisements. Contemporary calf, joints starting; interior good. From the library of Arnold Thackray with his bookplate. First edition of what is considered to be the best account of the history of Scotland up to the beginning of the seventeenth century. Robertson (1721-1793), a minister in the Church of Scotland, was the head of the University of Edinburgh. This is his most famous work, and quite popular: "The first edition was exhausted in less than a month. The reading public in England was startled, if not annoyed, by its merits . . . Walpole wrote to Robertson, 'how could I suspect that [you] have written what all the world now allows to be the best modern history, but that [it is written] in the purest English and with as much seeming knowledge of men and courts as if he had passed all his life in important embassies.'" Even Lord Chesterfield declared that the work "was equal in eloquence and beauty to that of Livy." (More testimonials set forth in the DNB.) The book ends with a long appendix and a short publication entitled A critical dissertation concerning the murder of King Henry, and the genuineness of the Queen's letters to Bothwell.
