Frontispiece portrait of Joseph Black. Normally found without an index, someone has place a mimeograph index in the back. Red cloth; title page lightly offset from portrait, otherwise exceptionally clean. Second edition of this important history of the chemical arts. "Thomson's work was the first history of chemistry in the English language. Over 700 'chemists' are referred to and rather complete biographies are given for 57, including Bergman, Black, Cavendish, Homberg, Klaproth and Lemery" (Cole). Thomson (1778-1849) studied under Joseph Black at Edinburgh, obtaining a medical degree and practicing in London. He was professor of materia medica at London University.
