According to Crabtree: "In this lengthy work, Howitt attempts to show that modern spiritualism had its forerunners in every epoch of history. It is an historical study with a strong spiritualistic bias." Volume I contains sections on the supernatural in Germany, France and Switzerland, in ancient Egypt, Chaldea, Persia, India, China, Greece and Rome, in the Biblical and Apocryphal scriptures, in the Catholic Church, and among the Native Americans. Volume II discusses supernaturalism in regards to magic, Waldensians, Medieval heretics, Luther and the early reformers, the Church of England, the miracles in the Churchyard in Paris in 1731, spiritualism in North America and England, the Philadelphia Brethren, George Fox and the Friends, Madam Guyon, Jacob Böhme, Emanuel Swedenborg, John Wesley, The Moravian Brethren etc. First published in Great Britain, 1863.
