About this Item

Frontispiece, 11 plates and text illustrations throughout. Each poem with separate title. Full decorated reversed suede. Contemporary inscription dated February, 1892, on fly-leaf. First English edition of this work. "One Hoss Shay" was first published in an 1878 five-leaf pamphlet. The American edition was entered for copyright on October 2, 1891, and on October 28, 1891, 250 copies, provided with substitute title pages (with the London imprint) were shipped to Gay and Bird in London. The pen and ink illustrations by Howard Pyle (1853-1911) were so popular that he was asked to re-do them in colour for the holiday re-issue of the book. BAL, 9034; C&T, p. 237.
