Commissioned by The American Weekly to write a Christmas Story, Cronin chose to write this tale, about the wife of the innkeeper which had no room for Mary and Joseph. It originally appeared in the December 21, 1958 issue. Ben Stahl (1910-87) was an acclaimed illustrator and founder of a renowned art school, who won numerous awards, including the Saltus Gold Medal from the Academy of Design.
