About this Item

New Haven, thick octavo, xxxvi, 596 p., frontispiece and 8 plates. ***Content: In the first half of the nineteenth century, the three American editions of Bakewell’s “Geology” were the textbook of choice for advanced schools and colleges on this side of the Atlantic. Enthusiastically endorsed by Yale’s Benjamin Silliman, who praised its style and readability, it also presented a comprehensive, insightful treatment of geologic theory and processes, rocks, minerals, and fossils. Silliman gave the treatise a decidedly “American” flavor via his editing and his 118 p. appendix, partly intended to illustrate the compatibility of geologic evidence and sacred history. ***Condition: A VG+ copy in the original embossed green cloth covers and spine, with gilt lettering and decoration on the spine. The covers are well preserved, with only light rubbing to the corners, backstrip lettering bold and bright. Joints and hinges just starting, but strong; binding very firm. The text pages and plates show (the typical) light to moderate foxing, but are very legible. Contemporary signature of J.W. Gardiner on the front endpaper, indicating that he used this book at West Point in 1839-40. A penciled list of his classmates is on another endpaper. A handsome copy in the original state. Ward and Carozzi 106. Hazen 1460. Not in BMNH. Bookseller Inventory # OG5074
