About this Item

First Irish edition, following the London first of the previous year, which in turn was based on Buller and Bathurst's 1760 Institute of the Law Relative to Trials at Nisi Prius. The materials that formed the basis of this work, attributed here to "a learned Judge," were originally compiled by Earl Henry Bathurst for his private use; his labors were adapted and incorporated into a more widely published form by Sir Francis Buller. The sections cover actions founded upon torts and upon contracts, injuries affecting personal property and real property, criminal prosecutions relative to civil rights, "evidence in general," and "General Matters relative to Trials." The Introduction was published by => Elizabeth Watts, later Lynch, the widow and successor of bookseller Richard Watts; the volume opens and closes with advertisements for other legal works either at the press or just published by Watts. This edition is uncommon: ESTC and WorldCat locate only eight U.S. institutional holdings. 8vo (20.7 cm, 8.1"). [4], iv, 470, [2 (adv.)] pp. ESTC T116235; Sweet & Maxwell (2nd ed.), I, 335:1. Recent quarter calf and marbled paper?covered boards, spine with raised bands and gilt-stamped title. Pages faintly age-toned, with occasional mild to moderate spotting. One leaf with paper flaw affecting a few letters, without loss of sense. A solid, comfortable copy of a significant legal work. Bookseller Inventory # 34385
