About this Item

With 9 text illustrations. Original printed front wrapper. First edition of the author's original offprint of a talk read before the Royal Asiatic Society on May 18, 1869. He here takes the position that the generally accepted notion that gunpowder is of Chinese origin is unlikely, based upon what he terms careful scrutiny of Chinese literature dealing with the introduction of explosive and projectile compounds in Chinese warfare and ordinary life. Research was conducted to printed works as early as 1630, which refers to events from about 969 AD. Mayers goes on to highlight the various minerals and chemicals used by the Chinese in both artillery and fireworks. Not only is early Chinese literature referenced, but works related to gunpowder in other countries such as India and England are highlighted, all to prove that the introduction of gunpowder into China was much later than had been thought. The illustrations show various weapons used by the Chinese throughout the ages. The paper concludes with the supposed dates that gunpowder, as well as its first uses, was introduced into China. Not in any of the bibliographies for armaments or fireworks.
