The books advertised on the back cover would indicate a publication date of about 1948. *** CONTENTS: Dr Barry (1795-1865) was a woman who passed her life as a man; she served as Medical Adviser to the Governor of the Cape Colony and was Inspector General of the Army Medical Department. Illustrated endpapers graphic is a certified copy of an entry in a Register of Deaths, green cloth, 220 x 145mm, A fictional journal of the life of Dr. James Barry, the military doctor who served at the Cape, and Malta, who was said to have been the grand-daughter of a Scottish earl. Dr James Barry who was born in 1795 and lived for many years at the Cape masquerading as a man. Her secret was never discovered until her death in 1865 and so reported to the Horse Guards. Book Description John Lane, the Bodley Head, London, 1932. Hardcover. 1st Edition. James Miranda Stuart Barry was a military surgeon in the British Army. It was revealed upon his death that he was actually a woman it is believed that he was born with the name Margaret Ann Bulkley. Barry was raised as a female, but decided to live as a man in order to be accepted at university, and to pursue a dream of becoming a surgeon. Here is the first edition of this volume, inscribed by both authors. Condition is good in a fair dust jacket. The contents are clean and bright, but the cover shows signs of moisture exposure at the spine ends and along the edges. The dust jacket is price-clipped. It has a good front face, but losses at the spine ends, wear along the hinges, and losses along the top edge of the rear face. It has been neatly reinforced from behind and is now protected in a removable mylar cover. Bookseller Inventory # 003947
