About this Item

Original wrappers bound into back of buckram; library stamp on title and last page, signature of A. Jacobi, New York on title and bookplate of the Library of the Medical Society of the County of Kings on paste-down. First edition of the author's investigation on heredity and his current biological research treating his earlier analysis of the nucleus. Hertwig was the first to show that "in the final stages of fertilization two nuclei joined together, it became probable that the germ plasm was to be found within the cell nucleus" (Hughes), and he here returns to the subject of embryology to reexamine the question of whether the nucleus is the sole vehicle of inherited traits. Included is a discussion on the reconsideration of the theory of natural selection, a subject on which he had previously lectured as part of the development of biology in the nineteenth century. During the latter part of his life, Hertwig attacked Darwin's theory of natural selection and the subsequent outgrowth of social Darwinism; these criticisms framed his biological explanation for the passing of genetic traits. "The power of Hertwig's insight was blunted by his polemical style and lack of clarity about the causes of physically observed differentiation" (Dinsmore, p. 130).Hertwig (1849-1922), a leader in the field of embryology, was professor of anatomy at Berlin after studying under Haeckel, publishing in the fields of animal cytology and embryology. He was founder of the Anatomisch-Biologische Institute in Berlin, and was a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin and the Swedish Academy of Sciences. Bookseller Inventory # 13989
