Book Description Record Courier Printers, Baker, Oregon, 1984. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Illustrated (illustrator). 6 x 9. Joseph Washing Ham and his wife Mellissa with their family of ten children left N. Enid, Oklahoma, where he had been in business since that part of Oklahoma was opened for settlement. He had speculated in real estate and lost most of his wealth At one time he had been very wealthy. They came to New Mexico and settled in the Cuadalupe Mountains about fifty miles from Carlsbad near a country post office called Queen. Here he purchased a homestead in the year 1899. Joseph, now nearing 70 years of age, was restless and he wanted a change. He had never been really content with farming and wanted to get back in business. He had met some men who offered him the inventory of a general store in Lakeview, Oregon, for the home place. Joseph thought about it for quite a while and finally told the family about it, in the spring of 1915. He talked them into making the trip to Oregon. The family had moved to Colorado Springs and in the summer of 1915 they started on the long journey to Oregon. The family took the train from Colorado Springs across the mountains to Buena Vista and began the covered wagon journey--in 1915! The last of the covered wagon journeys. 52 pages, map of journey on verso of first (title) page. A rare account of a most unusual adventure. A circle drawn on the last page has also imprinted on the inside of the back cover. Bookseller Inventory # 003146
