About this Item

First edition: Inspired by English and French manners, yet a distinctly => American conduct book with much reference to contrasts between American and foreign ways. The anonymous author is notably arch in tone, to the point that some readers have wondered whether this description of excruciatingly correct behavior is intended as satire. Provenance: Front pastedown with bookplate of Frances W. Stevenson, front free endpaper with pencilled gift inscription dated 2005. Binding: Publisher's grey-green ribbon-embossed cloth, front cover with gilt-stamped title. Krupp's style Fs1. 12mo (13.3 cm, 5.25"). 172 pp. American Imprints 38472. : Krupp, Bookcloth in England and America, 1823?50, p 54. Binding as above, cloth unevenly sunned with spots of discoloration; extremities rubbed. Pages age-toned and mildly spotted. Bookseller Inventory # 33711
