Description:

First appearance of the Jarvis translation, an "elegant edition" (Lowndes), complete in two large quarto volumes. xxxii [translator's preface and "Advertisement concerning the Prints," by John Oldfield, M. D.],viii [reimpression of "The life of Michael de Cervantes Saavedra, with separate title page dated 1738],90 ["The life of Michael de Cervantes Saavedra. Written by Don Gregorio Mayáns & Siscár . . . Translated, from the Spanish manuscript, by Mr. Ozell," with the portrait of Cervantes designed by G. Kent and engraved by George Vertue ],[14],355,[1]; xii,388pp, with an allegorical frontispiece and 67 truly magnificent full-page copper-engraved chapter illustrations designed principally by John Vanderbank (William Hogarth contributed one) and engraved by Gerard van der Gucht, Bernard Baron, Vertue, and Claude du Bosc, and numerous fine head- and tailpieces. Handsomely rebound to style in full mottled calf, boards framed in blind with rolled vine border, spines in six compartments tooled in blind with center medallion between raised bands ruled in gilt, red morocco labels lettered and numbered in gilt, date of publication stamped in gilt. A Fine, wide-margined set, bindings virutally pristine (end papers renewed), text bright and fresh with only very occasional finger-soiling to margins, the plates in particularly deep, rich impressions. Provence: Ownership signatures of H. Pemberton, 1757, to verso of each title-page (perhaps Henry Pemberton (1694-1771), editor of the third edition of Isaac Newton's Principia and author of A View of Sir I. Newton's Philosophy) and beneath it that of William Rooth. Lowndes 401. Ashbee 410. Gibson's Library, p. 91. Jervas (a printer's error resulted in "Jarvis") was an artist and art collector, but he also had literary ambitions, and with Alexander Pope (whose painting instructor he had been for some six months in 1713) he edited a version of Charles-Alphonse Du Fresnoy's De arte grafica. But his major literary undertaking was this English translation of Don Quixote to which also provided the first introduction and a critical analysis of previous translations. Published posthumously in 1742 and frequently reprinted, "it is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original." (ODNB) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
